A Day in the Life of a Summer Missionary

One of the major components of S.D. Allen Ministries is the Summer Missionary Program. This summer is the sixth summer of the program. Our missionaries partner with community organizations in the Tuscaloosa area to host backyard Bible clubs, help make furniture deliveries, organize summer basketball leagues, and a number of other service projects throughout the summer.

One of the questions we get asked a lot is, “What did y’all do today?” So, we thought we would give you a glimpse into a day in the life of a summer missionary.

Hi! I’m Rod. I’m from Demopolis, Alabama, and I will be a junior at UA this year studying electrical engineering.

The Lord has put the S.D. Allen Ministry on my heart since last summer when my roommates participated last year. I want to invest in the forgotten parts of Tuscaloosa because Jesus loves them too, whether that is through furniture deliveries or with Summer Hope!

My day starts at about 6:30 am, when I roll out of bed, brush my teeth, pick my hair, and read my Bible.

My roommate (and fellow missionary) Nathan and I carpooled to the building.

We get to the building right on time - at 7:30 am.

This day, we had biscuits and chocolate gravy (and fruit and bacon) prepared by our very own Katie Holcomb (another missionary). Thanks Katie!!

After breakfast, Jeff leads us in a daily Bible study. This summer we are going through the book of Acts.

Next, we got all of our supplies ready for Summer Hope - water bottles, journals, crafts, speakers, etc. Then, we headed over to McKenzie Court.

We start out with a Bible story - this day we taught about generosity and the widow who gave her last mites to Jesus.

Then we had some fun and played some kickball.

In the afternoons after lunch, we usually help Jeff out in the warehouse or make pickups and deliveries. On this day, we straightened up the warehouse, and we unloaded several things off the furniture truck from donations that were picked up last week.

We also got to make a delivery and take a washing machine to a single mother.

In the afternoons, we have some free time to catch up on homework, go swimming, work out, etc. Then, we eat dinner at the home of a church family who has volunteered to cook for us. This is one of our favorite parts of the summer - getting to know families at Calvary!

We had tacos and nachos at the Green House with Adam & Carrie Jones and their family.

Our days are busy, but so fun! They are jam-packed with kickball, Bible stories, great meals, and furniture deliveries. If you would like to provide a meal for the summer missionaries, please click here.
