We are so grateful to everyone that has provided breakfast, lunch, and dinner so far this summer, and those of you who we’ll get to meet in the next few weeks. We would be starving without you! Thank you so very much for supporting the S.D. Allen Summer Missionaries!
Every year at the end of the summer, we ask the summer missionaries for feedback about the summer - what they liked about being a missionary, what they didn’t like, things they would change, programs they would like to see implemented, etc. Without fail, one of the things that they love most about summer is the meals with our church family. While the free food is definitely a bonus, they truly enjoy spending time with families in our church and getting to know people that they otherwise would not meet.
As a college student in Tuscaloosa, it is easy to stay in the “college bubble” and only spend time with other college students and not venture far from campus. This is one of the main reasons that we believe serving in Tuscaloosa is so important during college. Students’ eyes are opened to the communities and people of Tuscaloosa, and they can see Tuscaloosa for the city that it is - and not just a place they went to school for four years.
The missionaries love spending time with families of all ages and stages of life who are kind enough to provide a meal throughout the summer. In the first half of the summer program, we have played cornhole and Catchphrase at a family’s house that is new to Tuscaloosa; had a pool party at a couple’s house that have been in Calvary for over 40 years; played wiffle ball in the park with a young family and their two boys; and played an icebreaker game with a small group of adult couples. Dinners are always a blast, and we love getting to meet everyone!
Providing meals for the missionaries is a simple way for you to support them and their ministry in our community. Although you may not be able to join them during the day at their summer programs, you may be able to drop by some donuts for breakfast or host them for dinner after work. By sharing a meal with them, you are also partnering with them in the good work that they are doing in our city and with the people of Tuscaloosa.
